Top 100 Newborn Photography Blogs & Websites To Follow in 2020
It has been a while since I have posted a new blog entry. Over a year! We added a 4th child to the mix, and well… this blog kind of took a backseat. We will start off with newborn photography, and then work our way up to large family groups. Let me start off by saying that this is not one of my favorite age groups. Actually it is my least favorite. You spend most of your time trying to get the baby to sleep, not getting them to smile for the camera. There are some photographers who love this about newborns, though!
If you are good at getting newborns to sleep, the possibilities are endless. Either you love newborn photography or you hate it. Read my 10 tips for newborn photography beginners to get a feel for if this is the right specialty for you.
Or, if you are currently struggling with your newborn photography, this should help get you back on track! I cannot stress this enough.
We are all familiar with the cute and adorable newborn photos where the baby is resting on his or her hands or sitting up while swaddled. What it took me a while to realize is that these are composite photos, taken from two different frames. My advice based on my experience? In my experience, newborn sessions take at least 2 hours. However, the average time is 3 or 4 hours.
Why is this? If you have never experienced raising a baby, they need a lot of attention when they are so new. Dirty diapers, being exhausted, hungry, etc. However, it is ultimately getting that baby to sleep which will be time consuming. They are sleepier in those first 2 weeks and do not develop the usual baby problems baby acne, cradle cap, etc. And, they are much, much crankier during the week stage. How to do NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY - TUTORIAL pt1
In order to ensure that this happens, when you are first contacted by a parent about newborn photos, mark their due date on your calendar.I love both for different reasons.
However, as a newborn photographer, it is important that your client knows what this photography type you intend to do so there are no surprises during or after the session. The photography session can last up to 4 hours with feeding, potty breaks, and baby posing. Editing this type of photography session also takes quite a bit of time as each baby image needs to go through Photoshop individually to get a polished end result.
Newborn Photography Lifestyle newborn sessions — Are a bit more casual approach to this type photography. There may be some baby posing but the intention is to capture more natural images of the baby and their home. These photography sessions can be done up to 6 weeks old and usually last hours max. My favorite thing about lifestyle newborn photography is capturing the wonder and amazement between the family members.
Newborns are incredible but so is the love in the air. Personally, I value both types of newborn photography styles so I approach it as a newborn posed session, but use the breaks in between poses to get my newborn lifestyle shots. The breaks do not have to be wasted moments for you. Have the baby feeding take place in the best natural light and you have yourself a great opportunity for some newborn lifestyle shots.
Since the sessions can be up to 4 hours, I make sure to eat a lot before I go. The 1 way to ensure a successful baby session is to ensure your client knows what to expect and how to best prepare for the session. Many moms choose to feed while I unpack and setup.
Inspiration is everywhere — probably even in the form of Pinterest emails from your client. It is a great idea to have some poses in mind before you arrive at the session.

However, like letting the love story of a wedding day unfold organically, I believe the best images are unplanned and inspired by the uniqueness of each baby. Let the baby move, yawn, and stretch. Babies have wonderful, perfect, sweet movements, do not stress over having the perfect pose in every frame.
Because of the sensitive focus on a macro lensthe best moment to get these images is when the baby is very still in their deepest sleep. After I had my babies the last thing that I wanted to do was have my picture taken and put much effort into making myself camera ready.
I know firsthand how hard it is for a mom to get in front of that camera. But I also know how important it is. There will be so many baby images by the time the baby turns 1 and the sad reality is that mommy will hardly be in any of them.

Eager to learn, Meggan made workshops a priority as she built her newborn photography business. As she refined her foundational techniques, her newborn photography business grew, and she found herself incorporating fresh methods, guidelines, and photography props. Before gathering up her camera, photography props, and an adorable newborn to photograph, Meggan took stock of her lighting situation. Meggan understood that her lighting style would be as much a part of her brand as her logo.
Now, after years of on-the-job learning and real-world experience, Meggan sees the mistakes newer photographers tend to make most:. If the angle of your photograph is bad, the baby can get lost in the picture.
Practice, practice, practice! She also suggests these methods…. The photography prop is secondary. It can make a huge difference! Use your newborn photography props to enhance the photograph, not dominate it! These tried-and-true newborn photography props have served Meggan well for years, along with many other newborn photography pros! I see them in antique stores all the time. You can fluff fabric or fur insidelay the baby in it, and photograph the crate from above the scene….
Finally, you can have the baby resting their head on their handsextending out of the crate. The crate is also a great prop for photographing a baby with siblings! The bean bag I have is flat on the bottom and top. The bean bag should support the baby without engulfing them. Vinyl covers are easy to wipe down and sanitize. With newborns, the backdrop is often a blanket or a fur, and a background stand or frame is the perfect solution for preventing wrinkles and providing a clean swoop from floor to wall.
You can buy them online, or make your own! Safety is the most important element of any newborn photography session. Meggan employs an assistant to help ensure safety at all times — and even gets the parents involved when it feels right! Incorporating the parents into the newborn photography experience is a wonderful way to build rapport and keep them connected to their baby throughout the session:.
They will be happy to assist when it means safety for their little one. Place textured fabric or faux fur underneath the prop to add color or dimension! 10 Newborn Photography Tips for Beginners
The newborn photoshoot market is exploding because everyone is having babies—and everyone wants cute photos of their babies. This is great news for you photographers who want to try out different types of photographyor make a little money from your photography.
Newborn baby pics are also an amazing addition to your online photography portfolio ; a great newborn photoshoot can really show off your skill and range as a shooter to say nothing of your subject wrangling skills! Want to learn how to take amazing newborn photos so you can get a piece of this lucrative business?
Our newborn photography guide will show you how to produce newborn pictures like a pro in no time. Take some time to work out which kind of newborn photoshoot your client is after. You have two different types of newborn photos: posed and lifestyle. A good posed newborn photoshoot should happen when the infant is still just a few weeks old because they are still pretty sleepy a lot of the time.
Typically a posed newborn photoshoot can take around three to four hours. This will include set-up, feedings, changings, managing the parents, and clean-up. Lifestyle newborn photoshoots are meant to be a little more casual in style. The objective of a lifestyle newborn photoshoot is to capture more candid shots of the infant in their own environment, and, usually, include the parents in the shots, as well. Having the correct gear on hand is important—especially when a tiny baby is involved!
Consider all the different possible shots you can take of the infant and bring the corresponding lens with you. Try to picture a large cylindrical squishy ottoman, or something similar. The baby can rest on this, allowing you degree shooting access, which is key for newborn pictures.
These are great for adding a pop of color or texture—and they help make the infant a little cozier. This is the fun part: try and have a bunch of options on hand, including baskets, barrels, oversized flowers, animal ears, etc. Try and refresh your prop trunk a few times a year with trendy items; parents should always be pleased with the newborn photography props available!
Have a playlist on your phone or iPod filled with soothing music to help drown out the sound of your shutter, as well as to help keep the baby asleep. Sleep time is crucial in the infant photography game. Your clients need to have a clear understanding of what the newborn photoshoot day is going to look like. An email template is probably your best bet. Here are a few newborn photography tips that will ensure set-up goes smoothly. Make sure to outline these asks in the e-mail template so parents are prepared!
Recommend that your client feed the baby right after arrival or during set-up. Make sure to have a private area for any breastfeeding folks, or a generous cover, in case they want a little privacy. You want the baby to be the star of the show! One way to do this is to use a variety of complementary skin-tone shades for your backdrop and any newborn photography props.
Want your baby to really pop in the newborn photos?
Place them against contrasting colors, like a rich purple or emerald green, or a light yellow or seafoam green. Pastels are hot right now. If you want your newborn baby photos to look very cool and of-the-moment, go for a pastel backdrop and accessories. Pale pink, baby blue, butter yellow—they all look amazing. Once you get the hang of it, with the help and permission of the parents, gently move the infant onto their side for a cute side shot, then on to the sprawling baby back shot.
Here is a big tip for all newborn photography newbies: let the baby move! Let the little one wiggle, yawn, squeeze their fists, and roll over. These are great opportunities to be present and snap away.If you want amazing portraits of your newborn, your best bet is to invest in professional photos.
